External traffic to Amazon would be traffic such as Facebook, Youtube and Google Ads.
But Amazon has its own advertising platform, so why would you ever want or need to send any external traffic to your product listings?
Well, first off you start to develop an omnipresence, showing up everywhere your customers search for you. (and even “following” them with retargeting)
If you are in more places at the same time and are seen more, you are going to have more chances to get the sale.
As you know, sales velocity is a major reason for ranking boost on Amazon (the more sales the more the algorithm favors you). This in itself, will help boost your rankings.
But, the largest reason you should be paying to send qualified relevant traffic to your Amazon listings is the fact that Amazon gives quality web traffic a ranking boost!
External Traffic to Amazon = EXTRA Ranking Juice = a TON more sales!
FeedbackWhiz even stated that “Some go as far as to claim they give 3x the ranking benefits to sales originating outside of Amazon, compared to organic sales.”
You have to look at it through the eyes of Amazon.
You are paying Facebook or Google (reputable websites, you think?) to send traffic from their platform to Amazon.
Amazon looks at this while drooling and thinks “Since you dragged those souls off of Facebook and sent them to us for free, we are going to reward you with a ranking boost!”.
Keep in mind though that if you EVER do the opposite and redirect any traffic from Amazon anywhere else you will be violating their Terms of Service and you will get slapped (not in your face, but it will feel like it)… or your account shut down. Don’t do it!
So if you want to make a crap ton more sales and dominate search results, then you must send traffic to Amazon from reputable outside sources.
Amazon PPC is extremely important to your winning on Amazon, matter of fact, it has become the #1 way to launch products on Amazon.
In the past, giveaway services that generate reviews and assist with keyword ranking were the holy grail.
Then, when Amazon updated its terms of service, companies such as Rebate Key were given the boot. Ahh, the good ole’ days. Oh well, the savvy marketer will always make a way.
So, a mix of external traffic and Amazon PPC will keep your competitors off your heels, while you earn a higher spot in Amazon’s search results.
You will witness for yourself as you take home even more bacon!
Don’t take my word for it, set up some tests. Run some external traffic to your listings and track keyword rankings over time.
Either way, more sales is always a great thing!
